After starting the season by losing three of their first four games, John F. Deering Middle School has not only won four of their last six games, but has clinched a spot for the second consecutive year in the Middle School State Playoffs.

Deering 10  Bain 0

Led by the two hit pitching of Rich Grenier Jr. and a 12 hit attack, Deering evened their record at 5-5 with two games remaining in the season.

In five innings pitched, Grenier, who picked up his third win of the year, allowed only two hits while striking out six and walking one.  Out of 56 pitches, the burly right hander threw 41 strikes.

Offensively, Deering received contributions from Rich Grenier (2/3, one run scored, and 2 r.b.i.'s), Tony Correia (one run scored), Rich McNeil (1/2, one run scored, and 1 r.b.i.), Anthony Indeglia (1/1, one run scored), Evan Barrera (2/2, one run scored and 1 r.b.i.), Kyle Beck (3/3, two runs scored, and 1 r.b.i.), Antonio Rei (one run scored), Matt Masse (one run scored), Ryan O'Kelly (bases clearing triple), Ray Zincone (one run scored), and Andrew Hebert (2/4, one double). 

Deering 4  Western Hills 3

Led by the stellar pitching of Matt Masse, Deering recorded their biggest victory of the year over perenial Middle School power, Western Hills, 4-3.  With the upset victory, Deering clinched a playoff berth and dropped Western Hills (8-2) out of a first place.

Masse struck out five and allowed only five hits in seven innings of work.

The Junior Wizards, who beat the Cobras for the first time in eight years, came from behind to win this game. 

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Deering scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  With one out, Rich McNeil walked, moved to second on Andrew Hebert's single to left, and moved to third when Ray Zincone beat out a infield grounder.  After a wild pitch scored McNeil, Troy Lavoie tied the game up with an infield hit.  After a Western Hills' error, Ryan O'Kelly, then, lined a double to right field to make it 4-2. 

After allowing one run in the top of the seventh inning, Masse, struck out a batter and induced a ground out to end the game.

Park View 17  Deering 2

In a tough loss to Park View, Deering received offensive contributions from Ray Zincone (two walks), Evan Barrera (1/2), Troy Lavoie (1/1, one walk), Rich Grenier (1/3), Rich McNeil (one walk and one run scored), and Anthony Indeglia (one run scored).

Scituate 9  Deering 0

Despite receving solid pitching from starter Rich Grenier Jr., Deering could not get their offense going in a 9-0 "no hit" loss to Scituate.

Grenier, who left the game with Deering behind 4-0 after five innings, allowed no earned runs on four hits while striking out two batters.

Deering 9  Father Doyle 7

In a back and forth game, Deering won an important league contest, 9-7, over Father Doyle School of Coventry.  The win gave Deering a 2-0 series sweep against Father Doyle.

Eighth grade pitcher, Kyle Beck, picked up the victory by allowing only three earned runs on four hits while striking out one in six innings of work.  Tony Correia picked up the save by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning. 

Offensively, Deering received contributions from Troy Lavoie (two runs and 1 r.b.i.), Ray Zincone (1/3, 3 r.b.i.'s), Ryan O'Kelly (1/4), Joe Colanduono (1 r.b.i.), Matt Masse (one double and one run scored), Andrew Hebert (1/2, two runs scored), Antonio Rei (1/2, two runs scored), Rich Grenier Jr. (three walks and two runs scored), and Kyle Beck (1/3, 2 r.b.i.'s). 

     Backed by a 15 hit attack, Deering won their second league game of the year against Father Doyle School of Coventry, 15-5, in a game which lasted only five innings.  The win, not only puts Deering in a three team fight for the final two playoff spots, but catapulted them into fourth place. 

     Once again, burly eighth grader pitcher, Rich Grenier Jr., took the hill for the Junior Wizards and left with win.  Grenier, who had the support of his offense with 15 hits, picked up his second win of the year by allowing two earned runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings pitched. 

     After Rich Grenier kept Father Doyle scoreless the first two innings (two strikeouts, two groundouts, and two pop ups), Deering’s offense got into gear with five runs on three hits and three walks in the bottom of the second inning after two outs. 

     Antonio Rei and Grenier singled to put runners at first and second.  After Anthony Indeglia walked to load the bases, Troy Lavoie and Ray Zincone both walked to give Deering a 2-0 lead.  Ryan O’Kelly, then, blasted a three double to the left field fence to empty the bases and give Deering a 5-0 lead. 

     In the bottom of the fourth inning, Deering continued their offensive onslaught with four more runs to open up a 9-1 lead.  Rich Grenier beat out a bobbled grounder to third base to lead off the inning.  After Indeglia reached on a fielder’s choice, Troy Lavoie, Ray Zincone (r.b.i.), Ryan O’Kelly (r.b.i.), and Matt Masse (2 r.b.i.’s) singled.

     Offensively, the Junior Wizards received contributions from Drew Doran (1/1), Anthony Indeglia (two runs scored), Tony Correia (1/1, one run scored, 1 r.b.i.), Rich Grenier (1/2, one run scored), Antonio Rei (1/2, two runs scored), Andrew Hebert (1/3, one run scored), Matt Masse (2/3, one double, & 2 r.b.i.’s), Rich McNeil (game ending r.b.i. single), Ryan O’Kelly (3/4, one double, two runs scored, & 5 r.b.i.’s), Ray Zincone (2/3, three runs scored, & 1 r.b.i.), and Troy Lavoie (2/2, one run scored).

     Deering (2-3) will play three important games this week (week of May 4th).  They will travel to Scituate (2-4) on Tuesday and travel to Paine Field on Wednesday to play Father Doyle (2-4).  On Friday, they will host Scituate at Ray Silva Field.   

     The West Warwick Cal Ripken 2009 Major Division season commenced wth three games.

Orioles 3  Red Sox 1

     In what could be a preview of this year's championship final, the Titan Sports Orioles defeated the Centreville Bank Red Sox, 3-1. 

     Led by the two hit pitching of Hunter Dean, Nick Morel, Trevor Lawton, and Ray Zincone, the Orioles managed to keep the potentially potent offense of the Red Sox in check the entire game.

     Hunter Dean, who earned the victory, allowed only one hit and struck out four batters in three innings of work.  Nick Morel allowed only one run on one hit and an error in the fourth inning.  In the fifth inning, Trevor Lawton struck out the side and Ray Zincone struck out two in a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

     For the Red Sox, starter Nick Motroni pitched well.  In two innings of work, Motroni allowed only one hit while striking out four batters.  Greg D'Ambrosca, who pitched two innings of middle relief, struck out three batters and allowed only two hits.  Tyler Boisclair struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

     After allowing the Red Sox to score an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning, the Orioles scored three runs on hits by Nick Morel and Oliver Daras (triple).

     Offensively, the Orioles were led by Ray Zincone (single and one run scored), Nick Morel (single and one run scored), and Oliver Daras (one r.b.i. triple).  The Red Sox received hits from Mitchell Moore and Andrew D'ambrosca.

Athletics 7  Dodgers 1

     Led by the hitting and pitching of Evan Barrera, the WW PIC Athletics defeated the Coventry Glass Dodgers, 7-1. 

     In four innings of pitching, Barrera, who did not allow a hit, struck out 11 batters and walked five.  Matt Grenier struck out one and walked one in one inning of pitching.  Andrew In struck out two and allowed one run on one hit in the sixth inning.

     Offensively, the Athletics (last year's champions), who have gone from one of the most experienced teams to one of the most inexperienced teams, were led by Michael Carley (1/2, three runs scored, and two stolen bases), Matt Grenier (one double and two runs scored), Evan Barrera (one double, one triple, three runs scored, and 2 r.b.i.'s), Kyle Baxter (1/3, 1 r.b.i.), David DeCosta (one r.b.i.), Matt Reid (one r.b.i.), and Alex Hernandez (1/2).    The Dodgers received a hit from Rich McNeil who double and scored in the sixth inning.

Marlins 7  Yankees 6

     In the most exciting and dramatic games of the day (tying run thrown out at the plate to end the game), the Richard's Oil Marlins defeated the Gordon Orthodontics Yankees, 7-6.

     Offensively, the Yankees were received contributions from Tom Doran (one single, two walks, and one run scored), Mike Defusco (one single), Anthony Indeglia (two walks and one run scored), Caleb Hoyle (one double), Jake Woodside (two walks), Alex Nault (one walk and one run scored), Trevor Caddick (one walk and one run scored), and Alex Mulligan (two walks and two runs scored).

     Offensively, the Marlins were led by Ben Roy (one single and one run scored), Brian Moretti (one run scored), Jake Roy (3/3, three runs scored), Joe Maynard (two doubles and one run scored), Tom Peccia (1/2, one run scored), and Jon Skurka (one single).
